About this Unit
The Directorate of Graduate Studies, and Training (DGST) is the central academic unit of Ibanda University responsible for the coordination, development, and quality assurance of all postgraduate education and research activities. Established in accordance with the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 (as amended), and operating under the authority vested in Senate by the Ibanda University License, the Directorate serves as the University’s foremost institutional engine for academic excellence, research, innovation development, and structured community engagement.
In summary, the Directorate of Graduate Studies, and Training serves as the strategic and administrative backbone of postgraduate education and research at Ibanda University. Its core functions encompass the following areas:
- Strategic leadership in graduate programme design, implementation, and continuous improvement.
- Administration of postgraduate admissions, supervision, progression, examination, and graduation in line with institutional and regulatory standards.
- Promotion of a vibrant research culture through scholarly inquiry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and grants mobilization.
- Coordination of research training, academic skills development, and supervision support to build institutional research capacity.
- Quality assurance of all graduate programmes to ensure alignment with NCHE accreditation requirements and national academic standards.
- Facilitation of innovation, intellectual property development, and the practical application of research to community and national development.
- Structured community engagement and transformation through research-informed outreach and societal impact programmes.
- Preparation of institutional reports, programme reviews, and compliance documentation for Senate, NCHE, and other stakeholders.
Through the execution of these functions, the DGST positions Ibanda University as a centre of postgraduate academic excellence, research-driven innovation, and community-responsive higher education, fully aligned with national quality assurance standards and responsive to the evolving demands of knowledge-based development in Uganda and beyond.
